I agree PCMCIA storage is convenient. It will be popular until the
prices of big flash mamory cards come down from the ionosphere.
The latest 4GB tiny hard disc from Hitachi is packaged for
Compactflash slot rather than PCMCIA. I think the new Toshiba 4GB
disc will also be packaged this way. That packaging makes them
smaller, faster and more power-efficient. They will fit in the FR-2's
Compactflash slot.
The primary market for the 4GB Hitachi drive is storing photos in
digital cameras. Street price for this drive is about $450. Somebody
noticed that a $200 portable audio player, the Creative Muvo2, uses
the Hitachi drive. So now people buy the Muvo2, perform a
drive-ectomy, and use the drive in their camera instead.
