Good luck with your trip Martyn.

For recording, I do have a suggestion. It is quite noisy along most of the
Platte River due to the proximity of the superhighway I80. I was able to ge=
t
some pretty good recordings of cranes by going upstream to Lewellen (near
Ogallala) and then somehow finding access to the river downstream from
Lewellen, either via Rt. 92 or else via dirt roads on the south side of the
river.

Another possibly excellent recording spot would be downstream from Keystone=
,
which is also near Ogallala. You might have to get permission to cross some
farmer's field, but I think that would be easy. Cranes are very common alon=
g
many sections of the river up near Ogallala.

Thanks for the suggestion, but if you go back to the original post you will
see that I need 20 recording devices, and although not explicit in the post
I need a minimum of 10hrs worth of recording.

I am also not recording from a microphone but directly from the bat detecto=
r
output..

I accept your general points however on the benefits of recording straight
to a portable, but with my seriously disappointing experiences of battery
life on portable, I would be very wary of relying on 8 hrs worth of life.
