Another potential problem might be the sample rate and bit-depth selected in Audition. 44.1 kHz at 16 bit would best match the MD format. Windos XP has an option that allows to optimize the processor priority either for applications or background tasks. You might try the 'background tasks' option. This option can be selected from the System Control Panel under System Properties / System Performance / Settings / Extended / Processor Scheduling.
