I've often wondered just how far they got. And if the native domestic
chickens just gradually grade away from their characteristics as you get
farther away. I did not really expect they'd gotten that far.
Actually gray jungle fowl is a domesticated species in a limited way.
Specialist growers keep them to grow feathers for fly fishermen. When I
first started fly fishing the skins we would get came from wild birds,
but that was outlawed, so captive stock is used now. This has resulted
in the ready availability of some previously really rare colors.
I used to get skins by going to the local stock auctions and bidding on
cocks I'd find that had the right feathers. Probably from some illegal
cockfighting bunch. The local hippie commune was happy to help dress
them for the meat and I'd get the feathers I needed. Usually less than
50 cents a skin that way.
