RE: Good Enough

One of the disappointments I have is that no matter how sweet the
recording I may get it is always stereo. Unless the headphones are on
it is just out there in front of me. Even with headphones it doesn't
quite sound right.

In the field the sound envelopes me. There is such a noticeable
difference between what I experience and what comes out of the speakers
at home. I can try to imagine I am there in the woods but my ears and
brain know better.

I haven't the experience of recording surround or multichannel but I
hope and dream that it might help. I would hope that I really could
hear the bird fly up behind me and then off to my left and front. Even
then however the vertical imaging would not quite be there. I recall
the discussion of the 4 mics placed in a pyramid formation to capture
sound in all directions and wish I could hear this in a studio
somewhere.

Sure, I've got some sweet stereo stuff, but until I am enveloped in the
sound experience it will not quite be "good enough."

It's one of the bad things about being the originator of a recording
everyone likes. You know everything wrong with it, how you might have
done it better. Your own personal view of the recording is likely to be
much lower than everyone else has.

But, that's only one "good enough". It's quite different, when someone
asks me if a certain technique or piece of equipment is good enough for
their purpose. What they get back will relate entirely to that, not some

ultimate recording goal I might have.

"good enough" is all about appropriate for the purpose, without wasting
resources if that's part of the criteria. And it usually is, the supply
of money is never infinite.

I have a fully unobtainable goal of making recordings that I'll be
completely happy with in all respects. I know I'll never be completely
happy with anything I do. That does not, however, conflict in any way
with the concept of "good enough". Or using that concept. That concept
saves me a lot of unnecessary stress.
