There are several lossless compression
technologies today. Lossless compression
is a relatively simple algorithm, and can
be added to the data stream in real time.
The reason lossless compression is not used
as the sole method of saving storage space
is that lossless does not reduce file size
as much as the highly processed "instruction
sets" that result from ATRAC or MP3 processing
do. Space is at a premium in minidisc or
MP3 players that fit in your pocket and need
to play for hours.
Zaxcom, makers of the DEVA field recorders,
plans to add a lossless compression option
to their new recorders. The new file
format is called .ZAX, and compresses
the audio stream by 50%-66% as it is
being recorded to the internal hard disc.
