An honest seller would report such damage, a dishonest seller will do
whatever they please.

As someone else stated, it is typically an item where the reserve was
higher than the market will pay.

I find asking the seller reasonable questions often reveals a great
deal about that person, as well as the item. Some answer the questions
clearly, others are vague, some ignore them. Sometimes the way they
answer raises my suspictions and I trust my gut and avoid them. If a
reasonable question is treated by the seller as though it is a
nuisance, well imagine the problem you will have if you buy the item
and it is not as described.
