Sharon Perry and I recently did a test recording with two MD's,
haven't tried to post it yet. Motion picture experience with
post-synch of DAT recorders has been that most are usable over a few
minutes length. Generally we're not looking for phase-accurate
imaging between front and rear pairs, at least not the way we want it
between L and R.

Don't bother with that, no need for it. Playback systems will route
the low band below the satellite speakers to the sub, it's called
bass management. LFE material in the recording is only needed for
effects that would overload the main channels. The LFE channel has
10dB more gain and is supposed to have 10dB more headroom to
accommodate very loud LF effects.

You can leave the center out, too, if there's nothing unique in it.
I'm thinking the center is a good place for dish/shotgun tracks along
with multichannel ambience on the other four channels.

Should give excellent surround as-is.
