Howdy,
Over on the forum for the editing software I use (Samplitude), David
Lewiston (who I know from his Nonesuch Explorer recordings) mentioned the
Soundfield system for surround recording in the process of answering a
question of mine about something else ~ I'm curious if anyone has any
experience using this (or trying to) in the field?
I found their site, www.soundfield.com, somewhat tantalizing -- I gather
essentially they make custom "single" microphones that are actually four
capsules in one housing; and external boxes that process the signal of
their mics to produce either an output that mimics conventional mic
[arrays], or four channels of raw information that can then be decoded
later ~ allowing all sorts of tweaking apparently. They tout the ability
to decode via one of their boxes to 5.1 (or beyond), which is what caught
my eye.
It's an interesting idea, especially if it was feeding, say, the promised
Sound Device 4-channel 744T ~ for me, that sounds like a perfect way to do
very portable surround recording, which is something I've been thinking
about!
The whole system's quite pricey however; their US distributor's current
price list asks around $5K for the mic/portable pre-processor; or $9K
including the box that decodes to 5.1...
...and I'm curious how robust it would be...
Any comments, users, advocates, etc.?
best,
aaron
