I would just like to add a couple of things to so called "off topic"
posts if I may? The environment is a dear thing to me and has been since
about the age of 7 when I used to catch insects in jars and be
completely mesmerized by their beauty. This got me interested later in
birds and consequently plants and all kinds of flora around this
beautiful planet.
I started to record nature about 25 years ago with my little portable
real-to real tape machine and discovered the world of archiving sounds
for prosperity, a little like Bernie has done.
I do believe that we as nature recordists can do a lot more for Mother
Nature BUT, as someone quite rightly said, if this group went totally
off topic and onto a kind of "Eco nut" group, I for one would also drop
out!
Human beings are mostly just ignorant, and ignorance breeds fear, anger,
complacency or cruelty. No - there's not much you can do, except protect
your little patch and not allow the stupidity of it all to touch you too
much. If you do you'll go mad, and what's the point? None of us by
ourselves can change the world. People need educating, and I guess each
one of us does that best by example. I have no time to waste on anger or
sadness anymore. I love the world as I see it in my own private way and
I am protective of my little circle. Yes, I'll sign petitions and even
go on marches if necessary, but I'm not letting idiots and meatheads
spoil my life.
Things are changing. Painfully slowly it seems some days, but it's
really happening, and I couldn't be more pleased. It is hard living in a
country where hunting has always been so prominent. Sometimes I can't
bear it. The culture here in the States has some good things about it.
Really bright, sensitive, good natured American folk are amongst the
most wonderful in the world - trouble is, every country has more than
its fair share of morons - and the UK is no exception. But sod it - I
can't spend my time thinking about them. I've better things to do.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Moderator's Note: "Off-topic" posts
I've been asked recently off-group to clarify the group policy
regarding "off-topic" posts. While this group's stated purpose is
discussion of topics related to recording natural sound, I feel that
a certain amount of friendly "off-topic" chatter among the members
serves to bind the group together and to create a more informal
atmosphere of converstaion. In my opinion, this informal atmosphere
serves to "lubricate" the group dicussions, and they flow more easily
and intimately. For these reasons I seldom interfere with minor off-
topic posts as long as I feel they achieve that goal.
I do, on occasion, write off-group to individuals whom I feel have
stepped over some arbitrary line (which is defined solely by my mood
du jour, what else I have on my mind, and what the poster's history
has been in the group). I read each and every post to this group, and
if anyone has a stake in keeping extraneous posts down, it is I.
With the forgoing in mind, if anyone feels that "O-T" posts are
becoming burdensome or offensive, I urge you to write directly to me
off-group and I will reconsider the situation, each on its own merits
and considering the history of the poster. I hesitate to become the
arbiter between parties who are feuding, and I will not allow feuds
to continue in group posts, and I urge you to attempt reconciliation
between yourselves before involving your moderator.
