Hi Everyone,

>From the many comments triggered by the idea of another Dawn Chorus
event, it sounds like it may be difficult to have everyone agree on when
and how such an event should be organized! And reasons for those
disagreements are of course easy to understand: While I am enjoying the
first weeks of summer, other members are getting ready for winter... I
enjoy a fast ADSL connection, while others are using a slower modem,
etc.

The good news is: Members who speak all seem enthusiastic about sharing
recordings! I don't remember having read a single message saying the
idea was worthless. And that's really encouraging!

Here are a few thoughts.

Perhaps we don't have to agree on a single set of rules, which would
likely limit participation to members from one hemisphere, who have the
technical facilities to upload a 5, 10 or 15 minute mp3. Perhaps we
should encourage the sharing of recorded material in various categories,
for members who have different aims and resources?

- Recordings could be organized into various categories such as: (1)
Dawn chorus recorded on a common day, with minimum length to be agreed
upon, (2) Dawn Chorus recorded on the same day, but shorter, (3) Dawn
Chorus recorded on another day in 2003, with minimum length to be agreed
upon,(4) Dawn Chorus recorded on another day in 2003, shorter, (5) Other
recordings...

In my opinion, the goal should really be to encourage as many members as
possible to share recordings along with ideas... As there are now over
500 members, one could expect to reach 50 to 100 participations!

- Sound format for all recordings submitted should be as "universal" as
possible. (1) Wav would be ideal, but is probably not realistic. (2)
RealAudio requires the installation of specific software. That might not
be possible (as in my work environment) or acceptable for all members
(2) Mp3 might be the most appropriate format for many listeners, both
for its compression and because it can be read by a variety of
packages...

Perhaps participants could be encouraged to make their original wav
files available for members who would like to listen without the
compression. The wav files could be made available "on request" only
through special channels.

- I am not sure who hosted the recordings for the previous event, but
Greg Clark, Klas Strandberg, and Richard Ranft offered to host this one
(perhaps other members did as well, that I have unfortunately not
written down). That means that, with a little bit of organization, it
would be possible to host more material, without too much strain on a
single individual and/or server!

The recordings do not need to be in a single location. A simple page,
from which all recordings can be reached, could be created.

Dominique
