Wish I had better news. Bob Cain reports the max gain for the US-122
to be 50dB or 16 dB less than the published spec for the Sound
Devices MP-2. If used with a laptop and the 24 bit converter, the
US1-22 could provide enough mic gain for louder environments but
would be pressed to work well for ambiance in lower volume, natural
environments. Might be acceptable for louder calls. Note the unit
would also require a special USB "dummy" power cable for using it as
a portable mic pre with an MD deck or similar. This would take some
knowledge of USB, DIY skills and could become complicated. Someone
with a laptop application might find the US-122 a good investment,
but as a good mic pre at low cost for all around nature recording,
sorry about the false alarm. Rob D.
