Possibly there may be some similarities. Certainly the polar plots of 
shotgun mics are also interestingly irregular.

I contend the way you find the fairytales is to get the equipment and 
test it in actual nature recording. Nothing cuts through explanations 
that are too complex or too simplistic like actual recordings. How the 
equipment performs in actual recording is what's important, not our 
feeble attempts to describe it in words.
