I use the Roland UA-30 for all my audio I/O. It's been replaced by the
Edirol UA-3D. The newer one is missing some of what the UA-30 has, but I
can't remember right off just what. They look essentially the same. A
internet search will turn up lots of info on both.
If you are going to spend money along this line you might want to look
at the Edirol UA-5, more goodies.
All of these turn up on ebay. I've even seen the UA-30 still listed in a
few catalogs, so there may be stock around.
The UA-30 is like a quality soundcard that hooks up to USB. It was the
first of this sort of thing, there are quite a few around now from
several manufacturers. It's got line level analog I/O, mic/guitar input
with it's own gain control separate from the gain on the line input,
optical I/O, coax I/O. And has a headphone output with it's own gain
control. Handles 44k and 48k sampling rates. Powered off the USB. Mine
currently connects my powered speakers, my Sony MXD-D3 CD/MD combo deck,
and as needed my Portadisc to the G4 via optical link. And runs my
headphones.
