There are no recording or playback level controls, but it works fine if you do not require these things. Another, more compact product would be the Audiotrak OPTOPlay: http://www.audiotrak.net/optoplay.htm It supports playback only and costs about $100. It offers 24/96 playback and has also an optical output. However, the analog output is a 3.5mmm headphone connector (I had no problems to use that output as a line out).
