If the music industry has their way probably yes, sigh. They would like
to lock consumers out of being able to record at all.

Minidisc as a field recording format for consumers has been severely
damaged by the mp3 craze. The focus for several years was on satisfying
mp3 folks. I have noted a few new Sony recorders seem to be separating
from the mp3 recording stuff. There is some hope.

Note that hard disk and solid state consumer recorders are virtually a
outgrowth of mp3 stuff or office dictation. Getting them to do nature
recording well is even more of a challenge.
