Where one will see considerable difference is when doing sonograms of high
pitchy bird songs such as the song of the Black-and-white Warbler, who goes
"wee-see-wee-see-wee-see". To the ear, this song occupies a very narrow
frequency range. If one does a typical arithmetic sonogram, the song is
expanded and doesn't "look" like it occupies a narrow range. In contrast, a
Log 2 depiction would show it as nearly all the same pitch, which is much
closer to the way we hear the song.
I put up a composite of Spark XL's log and linear scaling on about the
same portion of the SavannahNWR recording. To show the difference in how
this would display the two scales on it's default scales.
