ps. I didn't include recorder, preamp, etc. in my last e-mail.
Things are changing so rapidly, it is difficult to know which recorder to
buy, but there is a strong argument to wait for a nice 24-bit, 48 kHz
hard-disk based recorder. The new Nagra V is great in this respect, but
priced at 10 grand. Still I am tempted.
However, I think that a more "affordable professional solution" will appear
within the next 12-24 months, priced closer to 3 grand. Hopefully it will be
24 bit, 48 kHz and have very good preamps plus phantom power. Or is this
wishful thinking?
Also, one must keep in mind the possibility of recording ambient sound using
four discrete channels, in order to produce very high quality surround
sound. This can be done using two SASS units, and there are other microphone
possibilities for true surround recording. But recording true surround
requires an even larger investment (four mikes, a four channel recorder,
etc.).
