While checking in Sennheiser's European website I noticed they are
listing a new MKH mic, or at least one I'd not seen before.
This is the MKH-418S
It's a Stereo shotgun mic containing two mics in one for M/S recording.
Does not appear to have onboard decoding.
The specs for noise looked a little disappointing, particularly for the
side capsule, not at all up to the usual MKH standard:
The mid capsule: 14 dBA
The side capsule: 22 dBA
Impedance lists as 50 ohms.
I could find no sensitivity ratings, there did not appear to be the
usual PDF file either. I did not see a list price.
It appears to be about the size of a MKH-60, it's the same length. Takes
the same zepplin. Like all MKH it's phantom power only, has a 5 pin XLR
connector.
By way of comparison, a M/S Setup with the MKH-30 & MKH-60 is on this
page on my website:
http://frogrecordist.home.mindspring.com/docs/ms_mkh30+60.html
This has the following specs:
MKH-60 (mid): 6 dBA noise 40mV/Pa sensitivity 150 ohm impedance
MKH-30 (side): 13dBA noise 25mV/Pa sensitivity 150 ohm impedance
Since this combo can be fit in the exact same zepplin that Sennheiser
lists for the MKH 418S, I'm not likely to run out and buy one of the new
ones. Particularly as the MKH-30/MKH-60 MS combo is much lower noise.
I've been expecting to see Sennheiser put out a stereo shotgun, several
others have come out in recent years.
