When I first started using them, and for many years after they were
called optical, and not all were magneto-optical. Magneto-optical is a
more recent usage that is far from universal. Probably came in to
distinguish them from CD-R.

And, most recently I've seen optical being used to talk about CD-R and
DVD, ignoring entirely that the original opticals are still around. So,
I suppose I'll have to train myself to go MO or else 3.5" Opticals.

Note that a minidisc is also a MO disk, so MO does not define a specific
type of disk. There are also 5 1/4" MO disks, but not all 5 1/4"
opticals are MO disks, even if you don't count the CD-R/DVD. All 3.5"
opticals are MO disks.

Walt
