My older Sony MZ-R37 always records from the beginning of the disc
unless you press the "goto end" button before going into record.
Sucks, I lost a great recording of ambience in a redwood forest.
Irretreivable: the data had been overwritten by the new recording.

I've since gotten in the habit of pressing that button all the time
whether I need to or not.

This recorder does not have the "start recording at end" preference.
