NatureRecordists:

You may note that Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds has
updated its own web advice regarding field equipment for recording
natural sounds. The caveat remains, however, that audio perception
differs between species; so, if Homo sapiens is your only intended
audience, ATRAC may not destroy information of any significance to
human perception, and may therefore be inconsequential.

When it comes to making recordings for a library whose primary
purpose is to support biological science, it is desirable to make the
very highest fidelity recording that is possible. Professional studio
equipment cannot practically be used for field recording, so the next
best alternatives are considered in sequence. When push comes
to shove, as it inevitably does in most of our budgets and habits, a
very real consideration is: What can you afford and use reliably?
MiniDisc is currently the "best alternative" answer for many of us, and
is certainly the right choice compared to no recording at all.

Good recording,
                              Randy
