Well, not everyone. Being a mac user I have different software. I use
Peak VST to get the sounds in and general editing. I use Spark XL for
filtering and for sonograms (often at the same time via the FX Machine).
I've been pretty pleased with what I can get out of it just using the
filters that come with it. I'd use it for everything except it's
interface is a little cumbersome for the easier stuff and it's basic
waveform display is not as good as Peak's. It's oriented toward a
"project" like a whole CD rather than just tracks.
A major portion of filters are plugins, usually available in several
standard plugin formats. And most of the higher level sound programs can
use several formats. So you can pretty much set up what you need. Though
it can get expensive for some plugins. At the other end of the scale
there are freeware/shareware plugins, some of which are excellent.
Until recently I used SoundHack for sonograms. In fact that's the source
of the sonograms on my site. Spark XL has a much more adjustable
sonogram display. In particular it does log based sonograms and you have
virtually infinite choice of the frequency range. In my next iteration
of my site I'll probably go to Spark XL sonograms.
