De-lurking/silence

Hello nature recordists,

I've been lurking on this list for the past year-and-a-half or so,
and have finally decided that the time is right to jump in. I really
appreciate all of the information I've gleaned from the various
participants in the group. The list has proven itself an
indispensible resource- even if I can't keep up with it every day.
It's great to know there's a like-minded community out there more
than willing to share their experiences.

I am an artist who works with sound, and incorporate a fair amount of
natural phenomena into my work; be it the buzzing of flies, gurgling
intestines, or the hum of the nervous system.

In a previous life, I was a sound recordist for TV commercials,
industrials, and low-budget horror/exploitation films. While most of
my work was dialogue-based, I occasionally got to do wild effects, or
(even better) sound effects design. Those occasional sfx jobs and my
earlier experiences recording sounds in the wild strengthened my
resolve to focus on my own projects. The joy of getting a decent
dialog track from a person with good pipes was no match for the utter
astonishment that occurred upon discovering that hermit crabs
vocalize to one another (it's true! I actually recorded it in
Mexico!), or, that in a quiet enough room, it's possible to record
the sound of muscles contracting. Not quite as lucrative as the
aforementioned dialogue track with good pipes, but a helluva lot more
satisfying. Anyway, I hope to be able to contribute in some way to
the dialog that's already been established on this list.

By the way, if you're looking for a place to record that's free of
airplane/jet noise, I just returned from the Boundary Waters Canoe
Area & Wilderness in northern Minnesota. It's designated as a no-fly
zone. During the 4 days I was there, I heard one airplane every day:
the US Forest Service flies over at around 11:30 A.M. Otherwise, it's
fairly free of man-made noise, especially at dawn & dusk. I'll be
posting some recordings from there soon on my website:
