It was a commercially made CD of my original 95 tracks The sounds in the
studio were great. The first batch of 70 cd's were also fine. The second
batch of 500 is where the problems begin. I have tried different CD
players some work and some don't. Why the inconsistencies?

It was a batch of CDs for commercial sale.

Was it a commercially-recorded CD or one recorded on a CD-writer? Some
CD
players don't play CDRs, and most don't play CDRWs (the re-writeable
CDs).

The Sony MZ-R50 minidisc machine is very
highly regarded. Many recordists say it's the best
portable recorder made, even though production
of this model stopped in 2000.

Reasons people like the MZ-R50 include
   - size is small enough for easy transport,
but not so small to be difficult to use
   - high quality, durable materials
   -  ATRAC 4.0 used in the R50 is good enough;
      for practical purposes it's indistinguishable
from current versions 4.5 and Type R
   - the Jog Dial makes menu choices and track
      selections easy
   - fast reaction to TOC Read/Start Record/FF/Rew
(also explains why battery life is shorter)
   - when repair is needed, Sony service is more
reliable and faster than Sharp or Aiwa
=20=20=20=20=20=20
In today's market (especially in Japan) minidisc
players must compete with new solid-state MP3 players,=20
which are much smaller and cheaper. So the design goals
for models since the R50 are reduced size, extended
battery life, and reduced cost, rather than improvements
to the mechanism. Recent minidsc developments like MDLP
and NetMD are in response to MP3 players rather than
attempts to improve minidisc recorders. The market for
live recording is extremely small. So it's unlikely we'll
see a better minidisc recorder than the Sony MZ-R50.

Used MZ-R50 units in good condition appear on EBay
regularly (along with units that need repair -- read
the ads carefully). Expect to pay ~$125.
