Save your archive copy as .wav, uncompressed, save room by leaving it
mono. (If you were mac, or unix it would be .aif) If you expect that you
will be using your files mostly for audio CD's you might want to bring
them in and save using 44k 16bit sample rate. Which is the same as CD.

Copies to send through the net the best format is mp3, and judge
settings by listening, making the filesize as small as possible without
messing up the sound. But, don't consider a mp3 something to be farther
processed or edited, consider it a dead end.
