Cool Edit recommends saving at 32 bit, 8 bit would be noisy.

What I do is save all my files at 44.1 kHz 32 bit on. Edit them at 32 bit
and convert the edited file to 16 bit for making audio cd s.

The 32 bit files are also backed up on cdr.
