There are chargers for use with automobiles, those work fine with any
size 12 volt battery. I use one with my powerbook. So, it really does
not have to use 12 volts directly, in fact it's a good idea not to do
that if the car is running. The chargers have circuitry to tame all the
electric junk  in car power.
