Barb and all,

On my Mac I use an Australian sonogram software program called AudioGraph.
It represents the best value for money in sonogram programs that I know of.
You can adjust the scale, use colour or black and white, stretch, compress,
zoom in for more detail. You can hear the sound while the cursor moves
across the sonogram. It is very simple to use. If you have an AIFF sound
file (shorter is better) you just drag that icon over the AudioGraph
application icon and AudioGraph automatically opens. The cost is US $25 (or
in Australia, $A 30 posted as a CD). A bargain! AudioGraph was invented by
an Australian astro-physicist, Ralph Sutherland, and the low price is to
promote the study of birdsong and natural sounds. (Ralph's father is a
well-known Australian wildlife sound recordist.)

You can download a demo version of AudioGraph off the internet, and pay via
Kagi shareware, over the net. Or the program can be sent on a CD through
the snail-mail system, if necessary. I have demonstrated a printout of this
software via the Nature Recordists Group pages, doing a comparison with
Canary, using sounds from Lang Elliott. Canary is another Mac compatible
program but it is very expensive, some hundreds of dollars I think. I can
personally recommend AudioGraph, and can vouch for its creator Ralph
Sutherland. The program is, or will be, OS X compatible, and Ralph is
currently working on the next upgrade.
