In music, pitch and tone overlap in meaning, but are not the same. Pitch
refers to a sound with a strong fundamental frequency by which it is
measured, i. e. a violinist playing an open string such as an "A" (440Hz).
However, the tone (sometimes called "color" or "timbre") refers to the
actual sound produced by a violin "A" string, which is different from, say,
an oboe or a trumpet playing the same note. The tone, or timbre, is the
recognizable quality of sound distingiusing one instrument or voice from
another. It is a complex function of the relative amplitudes and
frequencies of the component partial tones.
Pitch, on the other hand, is often perceived as frequency but more
subjective since it is dependent on both the loudness and timbre of the
sound produced.

>One meaning of tone would be 'pitch', but another meaning would be 'timbre':
>the quality of sound which distinguishes it from another sound of equal
>pitch and volume.
