I missed the most important part of your message:
The Walkmans are excellent choices for beginners as well as advanced the
recordist. I sense that cost is a major factor here and wonder what they
will be using for a microphone.
As most of us know the microphone is really the most important part of the
recording process. Excellent recordings can be obtained on good cassette,
DAT or minidisc recorders, providing a good microphone is used. But without
a good microphone the results will be inferior regardless of the recorder.
