Security (for the Committee)

Way ahead of you Philip, the committee, or a member thereof, has responded to my (and Martin's) request and it is on the agenda for the next meeting. If you had noticed I sent the message to the President of COG also. I have also had replies from several other COG members who also no longer leave their vehicles at Kelly's Swamp and other "popular" birding sites and agree with the action I am trying to get the committee to discuss. You don't get anywhere by just moaning.

Yes that last point from Martin point is certainly valid.

I would not like us to think we are special. Sure we can agitate and there is certainly a case to ask. It is curious as to why those particular places Martin mentions, had those signs put up. I can’t think why distance from the city is relevant.

I will add a perspective. This sort of theft and vandalism happens all over the place, not directed to just us. But the rate is fairly low. Last year whilst I was visiting Jenke Circuit, Kambah, (where the Superb Parrots were hanging out for a while), where there is a big car park, for a church, a Sri Lankan centre, child care, doctor and dental clinic, etc, there being construction work, being done at the time. At a lunchtime event that I was at, one of the workers came out to notice that a large number of tools, had been stolen off the back of his ute, and that was whilst the guys working the site were within 75 metres, and there were people in the church and going in and out of the various facilities mentioned above. He asked, had anyone seen anything? No one had noticed the act being done. Probably anyone in view might have not realised people taking something were doing a crime.

A few months after that during the early morning, the church was set on fire and was totally destroyed. So that would certainly be a priority place for security cameras.

Mark wrote: “I would like to formally put to the COG committee........” Well that is fine, but liking to, isn’t doing it. I suggest that Mark actually does this. If so I hope the COG Committee present a simple, balanced letter. The ACT Gov should know that we are concerned. I can pretty much predict a response.

Fortunately we are not in a part of the world where it is common for people to be robbed directly of things they are actually holding.........

But the COG Committee should have more influence with the ACT Government (and better avenues to exert that influence) than a resident of NSW.

Interesting but I suggest you write to the ACT Government, rather than us, expressing appreciation and support for them having done this at those sites and suggesting other venues. There might be a history of more serious crimes going on at those sites than break ins to cars. And maybe ask for a cost / benefit analysis on putting up these systems at every public interest parking location, bus stop, park and ride venue, etc, as compared to spending on hospitals, schools, police, road services, etc.  They are responsible for these things, NOT the COG Committee. As far as I know the COG Committee is not a police force.

There have been quite a few comments on this chatline about break ins to cars.  There seems to be a consistent refusal by TAMS and CNP and WWT to do anything substantive about.

I was thus very surprised today to see a sign on the gate going into the Urriara Woodland () warning that security cameras were installed to detect illegal activity.

Then driving in to Urriara East Reserve ( according to Google Maps 25km from the ACT Legislative Assembly) I saw this :

Error! Filename not specified.
Why the ({expletive deleted} can't they put some cameras (and/or signs) up at Kellys Swamp and/or Callum Brae?  They are both 10km from the Assembly.
