Stubble Quail

I learned the Stubble Quail’s call at Lake Tutchewop (long ago) and so I always think they say “Tutchewop”. Pizzey’s book calls it “”pippy-wheat”. They mostly like dry grassy areas. The Brown Quail’s call is a rising 1 or 2 note whistle. The second part sounds a lot like a Diamond Firetail’s call. They mostly like wet grassy areas and edges of swamps. For both of them if you hear a call it can be hard to pick where they are, usually hidden in the grass. Approaching may flush them or not, or the bird that flies is not necessarily the one that was heard.

At present Stubble Quail are calling all the time so get to some long grass at one of the sites shown with an orange marker in eBird and keep your ears alert for the  distinctive call.

Getting a good look at them is difficult: my usual sighting is a small body, or several thereof, erupting from long grass, hurtling through the air and landing bum first.

Thanks David - I had a quick look at eBird which was very useful however I was also wanting to know what time of the day/night and in which vegetation type these birds are most commonly seen. I'm not sure if eBird provides this information or not.

Hi Rhiannon, eBird Australia is good for this: enter the species name and the location (e.g. Canberra) at http://ebird.org/ebird/australia/map/
Note that the large red markers are recent reports from publicly-accessible places.
It is best if you learn the calls of the two quail species (Stubble Quail & Brown Quail) found locally.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I might see Stubble Quail (or any other quail species) within the Canberra area? Quails are a particular group of birds that have eluded me for much of my birding adventures. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Kind regards,

Rhiannon
