I don’t think we need to name a hide after an introduced species (Vulpes = Fox) nor a species of Mosquito (Aedes). Pseudonaja is quite appropriate (Eastern Brown Snake) given it has taken up residence under one of the hides but it is not a bird. However all the other hide names are the genus names of birds so perhaps Bittern Hide should be changed to Botaurus or Ixobrychus. I quite like Mark Carey’s suggestions of Porzana or Gallinago – I did think of these when the topic was first raised, and I also like Rostratula as suggested by Steve Read. Despite Steve suggesting it doesn’t flow easily off the tongue, I disagree.
To throw a real curve ball into the equation, how about the(Steve) Wilson – (Stephen) Marchant Hide after two COG pioneers or even the (Robert) Gibson – (Robin) Brown Hide after the two young birders who did much of the early bird surveying of Kelly’s Swamp back in the 1960’s.

Great ideas from all, but on the basis that the hide should be named after a local bird, and with its initial letter not A, B, C, F or T (as these are taken for the existing hides), then from the current suggestions Porzana, Gallinago and Zosterops remain. I guess Rostratula doesn’t flow so easily off the tongue, and would raise expectations too high! And Zosterops, while maintaining the reverse alphabetical order C, B, A, Z as one goes anti-clockwise around the swamp, isn’t a bird particularly characteristic of Kellys. I’d vote for Porzana or Gallinago.
Steve
Vulpes? Pseudonaja? Aedes?
These have a nice ring to them:
Porzana
Gallinago
Cisticola

Subject: [canberrabirds] name the new hide at Kellys
As those who have visited Jerra Wetlands recently will have noticed a new screen and hide is being constructed at Kellys Swamp. My understanding is the existing 5 hides were named (officially or otherwise) by COG or a COG member. I therefore ask the group to come up with a suitable name for the new hide.
Current names at Kellys are Ardea, Bittern, Cygnus and the two on Jerra Creek are tadorna and fulica. Will see what the response is but maybe you can hold a vote at the next indoor meeting after we have a list of candidates ?
