Hi Alison,
1. I would endorse Rainham Marches. It is an RSPB Reserve. Catch a train on the C2C line and get off at Purfeet NOT RAINHAM. It is a long walk from Rainham, believe me!!. Look at the website www.rspb.org.uk/Rainham_Marshes
. Our older daughter Susan was a volunteer there when she lived in Rainham some years ago. As someone said not the most salubrious area as it is and old military reserve and adjoins one of the largest rubbish tips in London!!
Enjoy it,
John Walter

Subject: [canberrabirds] Bird sites one can visit from london by Public transport
I will be in London for a week ( probably staying in the Putney area) and was looking for suggestions of good birding sites to visit for day trips that I can get to with public transport ( and a bit of walking if necc ) ideally within 2 hours of where I am staying . I will be in the Peak district previously birding so I guess that I would like to see different types of birds . I will be there in mid june . I would consider a longer trip ( and staying overnight for one night ) , If there is anywhere really special to visit . I have never birded in the UK before. Grateful for any suggestions
Kind regards
Alison
