I love my Tamron 150-600 (Nikon mount, otherwise you could try it out). It no doubt loses out a bit to the 'real' lenses, but I don't think it is far behind. What you lose you really gain back in weight (I can comfortably carry it around all day), usability (the vibration reduction is quite amazing) and of course price (compared with the 'real' versions you get 90 or 95% of the performance for 10 or 20% of the price).
