About "That was really a bird that requires perseverance to see". Yes
generally true in that they are usually fairly inactive during the day. It
appears they also have the habit of staying in pretty much the same spot
over many days. Thus it may be obvious quickly and easy to find, if it is at
a regular spot and if that is in view, or they may be just out of view among
grass, maybe only 50 cm away from an obvious spot and you could spend hours
looking at that spot but being hidden nearby and they don't move much, you
miss it.

The snipe was initially nowhere to be seen despite we counted 7 Latham
Snipes foraging boldly around the dock. It finally came out further behind
the dock at 8pm just before sunset. Even this it only appeared for 5 mins
and then went further behind and vanished among denser vegetation. That was
