Thanks to all for that. I watched this bird fairly closely for about 30 to 40 minutes up till nearly 5:00 pm today. In the SW corner of pond 6, although after a few minutes it flew to the eastern side so I went round the pond and then watched it for longest after we both returned to the SW corner. At one stage a Black-shouldered Kite hovered low over the mixed flock of 5 species of waders, which did not appear to react at all.

Very good and a "new bird" for my "life list" (not that I keep a list). My last "new bird" was in Cairns in 2005 (excluding China in 2009). Shows how sedentary I have become.

The Wood Sandpiper drew me out to Fyshwick at lunch time; took about 30 minutes to locate and I, Roger W, Alastair S and Milburn got good views of it. It tends to be by itself rather than with the sharpies (of which I saw only 5); and I only located 1 Red-necked Stint.

Geoff – that’s starting to look more like a Wood Sandpiper (although the front-on angle makes it difficult to see the wing patterning, and the bill looks fairly long).
