Following on the below: I have
just 2 observations of just 1 Noisy Friarbird from my GBS area this year (one
Sept & one this week) This is way down on the usual.
I have just come home
from visiting Kambah Pool and the 3 nests I described on 12 Dec.
The Noisy Friarbird's nest with chicks in one of the 4 trees in
the central car park island still has chicks in it. And today I noticed a 2nd Noisy
Friarbird's nest with at least 1 chick, just above the entry road down to the
Kambah Pool car park (about 100 metres away from the first).
I can also
mention the Tawny Frogmouth nest has two
chicks, now mostly fully feathered. This time they were perched
with their heads under the parent's body. The adult appears to notice but hardly
react to the many people walking under the nest.
The Olive backed Oriole
nest now appears to be empty, presumably
young now left.

The Noisy Friarbird seems to be absent from my local area of NW
Chapman/Cooleman Ridge and the S side of the Narrabundah Hill reserve, in fact I
seem to have only one record for December so far.
Is this what other chat line subscribers are experiencing, or is this just
a local phenomenon?

Subject: [canberrabirds] Noisy Friarbird nest at Carwoola (and
another topic)
A
few weeks ago a Noisy Friarbird began acting very strangely around our deck,
causing me to wonder if it was gathering material for nesting. (They
raised 3 chicks here in January this year.) This morning I finally found
the nest, about 5m up in a large Yellow box tree. I am hopeful that I will
be able to see chicks eventually.
It is unlikely the nest will be parasitised by Koels as we get get very few
of them out here but I have this week recorded 5 cuckoo species in my GBS site
(Horsfields and Shining bronze; Pallid, Fan-tailed and Brush.
