Thank you to all of those members who
contacted me offering advice, etc. Unfortunately the Little Bittern died
before I could get it vet assistance. I will now ensure it gets to the
Australian National Wildlife Collection (need a contact). Closer
examination of the bird indicates that its left wing was badly broken at the
main joint and there was also damage to the rib area behind the wing.
This suggests it was struck by something while on the ground (with wings
folded). It was therefore unlikely to have been a dog which would more
likely have bitten it on both sides. It also means that the bird probably
would not have survived anyway.
I have uploaded a photo of it onto The
Internet Bird Collection and will do a Rarities Report

Postscript to my message below.
Wildcare have called back and it appears their bird person is away. I
have been advised to drop it off to West Queanbeyan Vet tomorrow and they will
take care of it. I would be much happier if the bird was to go to someone
who knew what they were doing. I dropped an injured Black Falcon to
the local vet a few years ago and they promptly euthanized it.

Subject: Little Bittern
Sadly the Little Bittern that we saw and reported yesterday
has fallen victim to (I suspect) a free running dog. It is alive but
injured and unable to fly. One of my neighbours found it beside the
walking path behind his house a short time ago. I have the bird in my
possession and have rung Wildcare and am waiting for their bird person to call
back. Does anyone have any good ideas on what we should do with it.
My phone number is 6255 8716.
