I was intrigued by your emails about the two snipe, and started googling the difference. I came across this highly erudite article which is too big and complex for me to read, but has a lovely lot of diagrams labelled phylogenetic analyses of Charadriiformes. There appears to be considerable evidence that they are not close relatives, but the conversation continues….

A good point. I think at the moment petition central is fully focused on Alan Jones so we had better go for the competition route with Messrs Christidis and Boles as the judges. The first question is what gets changed: the Latin (ie family classification) or the English? A second question could become which species gets changed?

As a newcomer to the study of wetland birds, I was surprised to find the Latham’s Snipe page of Simpson and Day had no Painted Snipe. Further investigation showed Latham’s are grouped under Scolopacidae while Painted are in Rostratulidae. This is confusing. Is it not time for a petition or competition to rectify this silly situation?
