Hi Elizabeth and other interested YFHE migration observers. Today I was out on the Budderoo Plateau heathlands (east of Kangaroo Valley, on top of the escarpment). Ten Km SE from Robertson directly, but in a very different habitat. There are many Banksia ericifolias in fresh flower there, and some Bloodwood Eucalypts (Corymbia gummifera) coming into flower on the Sandstone Heathlands in that habitat.. There were also a number of YFHEs there. Normally there are no YFHE present in the Heathlands, over the summer - so these birds must be migrating YFHEs - (i.e., they are not residents). The permanent resident New Holland HEs try to drive them away. But during this peak flowering season of the Banksias (now) - which coincides with the arrival of the migrating YFHEs, the numbers of YFHEs tends to swamp the resident New Hollands (and there is an abundance of food anyway). As of yet, I have not seen migrating flocks passing through (over) the Cool Temperate Rainforest habitat of Robertson, but as there are feeding birds just below Robbo, on the Sandstone, they will eventually pass by our area (where there is little available natural food for them).
