Hi Dan,
Magpie Geese, Cape Barren Geese and some other species were brought to Tidbinbilla for display at considerable expense and were pinioned to prevent them from leaving. The pinioning was done by a vet or vet trained technician under an anaesththetic and involves the removal of part of the wing(s) not just feathers. Some of the pinioned birds bred but their young were not pinioned if it was considered that there were enough there for display. Clipping is a waste of time as it only prevents a bird from flying till it's next moult.
