Howdy All,
I've been watching the slowly westward moving of the Satin Bower bird
reports in Belconnen over the last couple of years, hoping that one
day they'll get to Higgins....... today I saw a wattlebird swoop a
blackbird, which hopped away into the undergrowth..... and I
immediately thought of bower birds. I pulled up, reversed about 10
metres or so and hopped out of the car to check. There, under the
shrubbery was a black bird that looked distinctly like a bower bird,
but I couldn't see it in the sun, then it started hopping around and
calling so distinctively. There is now a full adult colouration
satin bower bird at the end of my street here in Higgins. I think he
has a bower active, but tucked around the corner of the shrub where I
couldn't see it properly. It is in someone's front yard so I will
knock on their door tomorrow when I have more time to ask if they
mind me skulking in the bushes for a bit to get a better look. <grin>
Also worth noting, I'm not at the eastern edge of Higgins either, but
rather I am almost directly across from the Pegasus riding school, so
I think this is the furthest west in Belconnen I've heard of bower
birds being present? So cool. I figured that others may be
interested in hearing they've made it this far, so I hope no-one minds my post.
Cheers.
