A statement of the obvious but be careful of snakes. I
had to be in Kingston yesterday at 10 a.m. so diverted to KS after that and was
there from about 11:20 to 11:40. I looked for the birds from the eastern side
and from about 15 metres from the fence and just about 50 cm into the
long grass from the short grass, I flushed a snake (I think eastern brown snake.
Fortunately this one saw me before I saw it and it went and hid. It only moved
less than its own length and was completely hidden in the grass. Being already
once previously bitten by a snake is more than enough for me.
I believe I understood Doug Laing to have said that he
had seen one of the Painted-snipe just shortly before I arrived. But I
didn't see any of them on that trip.
