Thanks Mark and Geoffrey good to hear they are still around.

BTW: I have just been informed that the Canberra Times had an article about the birds on Friday (for the benefit of those who - like me - don't subscribe to that journal it is on-line at http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/surprise-visit-makes-wetlands-centre-of-attention-for-twitchers/2316080.aspx) accompanied by an excellent Geoffrey image.

As the article includes the comment "Sydney photographer David Stowe drove down to Canberra almost as soon as he heard the birds had turned up here, happily crouching among the mud and tussocks for several hours to get photos of the birds foraging for insects, and bathing in the shallows. " it is barely surprising that on Saturday other folk may have decided to invade the mud and tussocks.

I did not visit the wetlands Saturday-Tuesday.  Yesterday they were not in sight early morning (who starts at 0930?  -  the day’s almost over;  anyway it seems early morning is not the best time for these).  However the 2 females were resting behind the log at 2pm (visible from the fence), still there an hour later after foraging briefly.   So far as I know the male has not been sighted since last Thursday.

I spent about an hour at various parts of Kelly's Swamp on Tuesday and did not see the Painted-snipe.  From conversations with others it would seem there were observers on deck from about 9:30 - 13:00 but no Painted-snipe were sighted.  Thus the final sighting might be as reported in http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/archives/html/canberrabirds/2011-10/msg00069.html.
