Our resident/local Eastern Spinebills spend a high proportion of their
nectar collecting time over the late autumn/winter in camellias, especially
the species camelias (C miyagii & C. grisjii flower for a long time from
April, and are sweetly perfumed, and there are several late winter/spring
flowering species that are profuser but briefer in their flowering) and
sasanquas such as C. Setsugekka. Not sure about the highly bred,
scentless varieties ....

It would be usefull for encouraging local gov't and residents to plant species to attract native birds. A book for attracting birds to Canberra gardens with flowering plants exists but I don't know of one that includes other food sources such as mentioned below. Peter |
