Without wishing to disparage the trove of useful information collected by the (area-limited, site-limited) GBS, that method, clearly enough, is not an appropriate way of bringing to account the last koel cry in a Canberra suburb.

Anthony

It has taken me a few days to come with a way of addressing your question as to whether the honeyeaters are moving early.  I would note, in passing, that on the morning of 14 March while in the upper reaches of  our block I thought I heard a flock of honeyeaters scooting through the fog.

My short, GBS based, answer to your question is "possibly a tad early but more evidence is needed before suggesting a cold snap is imminent".  See http://franmart.blogspot.com/2011/03/migration-of-yellow-faced-honeyeaters.html for some rumination.

I would also comment - WRT to Geoffrey's recent comment - that if folk wish to "diarise"such matters around their abodes (or the arrival and departures of Koels,  or other aspects of birdlife) completing a GBS Chart is a very simple way of doing so that will add to the information COG has available to address queries about bird related matters!

Hi all

A group of 10 Yellow-faced Honeyeaters just passed through the tree tops in my GBS area, heading north. Maybe a little early? Are we in for a cold snap??

Also, a male Scarlet Robin in my yard on Friday afternoon. I imagine they would not be common on GBS charts (Martin?).

I'm four weeks into GBS recording at my new home in Hawker, averaging 31 species a week so far.

And I agree with Jack, the pardalotes can be difficult to count accurately when there is a tree full of them!

Cheers
Anthony
