Yes I have had similar experiences. But I was not protected by a hat.
Only a small proportion of them are that nasty. I believe it is nest
defence, or the times I have noticed it, it was. I have seen "beware
swooping bird" signs put up by the ACT gov where the culprit was a NF,
not a magpie (or goshawk etc).

walking to my favourite watering hole , Canberra North B.C.yesterday I
stopped to look at a cackling noisy friar bird in full voice. It seemed
to stare at me with it's baleful beadÿ red eyes, as if to say "what are
you looking at ". Continuing my journey only seconds later an angry
brown, grey and black projectile flew past my right ear, hitting the
brim and very nearly dislodging my hat. Are they known for aggressive
behavior ?
