Many thanks to Philip and Michael for thoughtful comments. I have now
reviewed descriptions of the juvenile and immature plumages of this sp
and, altho I did not have binoculars with me when I saw these birds, and
the light was poor, I now believe that it was a case of an adult male
feeding an adult female, i.e. courtship behaviour. In other words, I was
probably wrong in identifying it as a dependent young.
Recent COG Annual Bird Reports have a few January/February records of
dependent young, but none earlier.
A useful learning experience for me - David

Other points to consider re the possible Pallid Cuckoo DY:
HANZAB indicates that courtship feeding of the females by males is
common in spring;. and the female can take on postures and calls
similar to a begging dy as the male brings food.
In eastern Australia laying from Aug - Mar, and June, but mainly Aug
- Jan, with the peak Oct - Nov.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Pallid Cuckoo DY & OB Oriole at Wamboin
This morning, at Wamboin, two adult Pallid Cuckoos feeding a begging
dependent young, plus our first OB Oriole for the season. It must be
